Plain sailing at opening event
RACHEL TOUNE
September 7th, 2009
TOWNSVILLE turned on its finest weather for
sailors from all around Australia at the
weekend.
The Strand provided the perfect backdrop for Magnetic
Island Race Week competitors
who are taking part in a number of events during
the regatta.
The 49-boat fleet was a sight to behold as it
raced in the opener along The Strand on Saturday
about noon.
It was the first time the waterfront event had
been included on the race week calendar.
Promotions director Rod Kothe said conditions
had been perfect so far, in contrast to last
month's Hamilton
Island event which
had the worst weather in its 26-year history.
''All the sailors have really enjoyed it so
far,'' he said.
''We've also had a lot of people on the
spectator boats.''
Spectators will now have to watch the race from
vantage points around Magnetic Island as racing
moves from The Strand to the island.
Boats and sailors from as far as Western
Australia, South Australia, Tasmania, Victoria,
New South Wales and south-east Queensland have
travelled to Townsville for the event, which is
in its third year.
The boats have been split into seven categories
- IRC racing, performance racing, sports boats,
three cruising divisions and multihulls - across
six racing divisions.
Mr Kothe said a free public event at Peppers
Blue on Blue on Magnetic Island on Saturday
night had been a huge success, with about 300 to
400 people in attendance.
''It was bursting with people and it was great
to see so many locals turning out for the
event,'' he said.
''We also had an event on Friday at the Arcadia
Hotel and some of the southerners were quite
surprised with the toad racing.''
He said he expected next year's event to build
up to at least 75 boats, as it was increasing in
popularity each year.
''The island has such different vegetation and
different geography,'' he said.
''The race around the island has become an
iconic event for the regatta.''
Yesterday the fleet competed in races around
Magnetic Island and Cleveland Bay, before an
iconic race around the island today.
Racing will continue until Tuesday, followed by
an awards presentation for the winners.
