How does an aquarium cope with an influx of fresh water? 🌧️
〰️
As Townsville welcomed more than 200mm of rain over the last few days, we have jumped in to action to keep an eye on the salinity (salt concentration) levels.
〰️
Normal seawater is 34-36 ppt (parts per thousand), and this is the target salinity of Reef HQ aquarium. Reef fish and corals require stable salinity to balance the chemical composition of body fluids – a process known as osmoregulation.
〰️
To compensate for the rain, we activate our reverse osmosis (RO) machines, which remove freshwater from our system (and keep the dissolved salt).
〰️
Our RO machines have been in operation since early this week, maintaining salinity close to 35ppt and our fish and corals remain happy and healthy! 😀 🐠
