One of Queensland's oldest gazetted cities – Charters Towers turns 150 today!

Gold was discovered by chance at Towers Hill in late December 1871, then in 1872 the goldfields were declared and on 23 June 1877 the 'gold city' became the second municipality in #Queensland.

The chance discovery of gold was made by a 12-year-old Aboriginal boy, Jupiter Mosman who spotted a nugget of gold in a creek base of Towers Hill. At the time the Charters Towers gold field produced some of the highest quality gold #Australia had ever seen, yielding £23,000,000 worth of gold!

For tens of thousands of years, the ancestors of the Traditional Owners, the Gudjal people (pronounced Goodjal) lived on country in Charters Towers. For the Gudjal people, the land has a spiritual meaning and has historically supported a significant indigenous population prior to European settlement through its rich countryside and permanent waters.
